1743. Carta de Aires António Vinagre, cura, para José Coelho, prior.

Author(s) Aires António Vinagre
Addressee(s) José Coelho
In English

Declaration letter from Aires António Vinagre, a church priest, to José Coelho, a head priest («prior»).

The author confirms to the addressee that he found the proof of a Church marriage.

Bartolomeu Rodrigues, mulatto, Old-Christian, also known as Bartolomeu de Orta, a cattle owner born in Spain, Almendro, and living in Southern Portugal, in Pedrógão, was accused of bigamy. His first wife had fled to Badajoz to avoid her husband's physical abuse and was believed to have died. She did not, though, and when she learned that he was remarried she had him prosecuted. He was sentenced by the Inquisition to an exile of 4 years in Angola.
