Letter from Pedro Cayetano Fernández del Campo, marquis of Mejorada, to his uncle Diego Ventura Fernández de Angulo, the bishop of Ávila.

The author asks his uncle for his state of health and recommends him a boy for him to mentor.

In 1700 the marquis of Mejorada made a claim against the plundering of his uncle´s properties. He demanded the recovery of some silver jewellery he had lent to his uncle, the bishop of Ávila, on the latter´s appointment as Ambassador Extraordinary to the Court of Lisbon. The litigation was followed in the General Court by the reeve of Ávila, who found in favour of the marquis declaring he had to be compensated for the amount he had lent. However, the prosecutor of Castile´s Apostolic Camera appealed to the Council of Castile for avoiding having to pay. In order to substantiate their position, they provided two letters written by the marquis to his uncle containing an agreement with regard to the silver. In addition to these two letters, the proceeding documentation contains two hundred letters written between 1683 and 1691 which were reviewed during the plundering. In 1705, both parties kept submitting claims. The marquis wanted the sentence in his favour to be ratified and the prosecution wanted to avoid the required payment.

Mi señor y mi tio aunq el savado escrivi a VS I y desde q llego a esa ziudad no he tenido notizia positiva de su salud, lo repito aora con mucho gusto assi por solizitarla como por acompañar con estos renglones a Don Miguel de Vera hijo del buen Don Luis de Vera a quien se pareze mucho en la cara y en lo hombre de bien de los dos hermanos he escojido el de mayor cuerpo aunque no tanta edad porq puede esperar menos; estoy zierto de su buen natural q ha de azertar a servir a VS I q es lo q yo deseo y a merezerle la honrra de su patrozinio, de que es digno acrehedor por hijo de tan honrrado Padre; estotro continuara sus estudios y buena crianza esperando la misma buena dicha cuando el tiempo y VS I lo permitan, y devo representarle q en cuanto a la costa no le seria a VS I el que queda aca de gravamen alguno porque tiene una pensionzilla eclesiastica q mi Padre le saco, y con ella se bandearia en cuanto a su dezenzia de traje y lo demas q se ofreze pues aqui no se atiende a otro fin q al de que estos muchachos tengan la buena educazion de la casa de VS I y el amparo de tal dueno y VS I ha de perdonar mi molestia en esto a la q estimamos y devimos en casa al buen Dotor Vera yo q ando a los pies de VS I y la Marquesa le b l m deseando ambos q Nro senor gde a VS I como puede y he mr Md 6 de Jullio 1683
