In English

Family letter from Maria Rosa to her son, Jacinto Júlio de Queirós Moura, student

The author gives her son, who is a student in Coimbra, some news about their family.

Jacinto Júlio de Queirós Moura, a law student, and Josefa Viana de Campos, his lover, were both accused of adultery. He was also accused of planning the death of Dr. António Joaquim de Campos, Josefa’s husband.

«My son, I've received yours in this mail. I’m glad you’re in good health, better than us, since we all have spent the Lent sick, with a lot of defluxion and cough. I now send you the socks. They are colourless, since we only spun the thread after you asked us. The black ones will go in a few days, and so will the handkerchief that Maria will make, since the socks are being dyed. She asks you to say, in case you write soon, whether you want the handkerchief with a black or colorful embroidery. About the money, there must be a lot of students who won’t give anything. You know very well my possessions and that here bread is being sold at two pennies. You see, if I buy it, how can I keep a penny? Well, get me what you can. And remember I’m your mother, Maria Rosa.»
