Letter from Juan de Santiago y Poncela to his wife, Manuela Aguiar.

Juan de Santiago informs his wife that he will soon leave Madrid, but that before leaving he wants to finish some tasks.

In 1792, Juan Manuel de Santiago y Poncela reported to the authorities the breaking and entering of the house of Antonio Gutiérrez, priest and honorary chaplain of the cathedral of Valladolid, where Juan de Santiago lived with his family in some rented rooms. The burglar had stolen a sum of 5000 or 6000 reales. The inquirers searched all the house, and seized three letters that were among the clothes of Manuela Aguiar, the wife of Juan de Santiago, and that were joined to the proceedings. The principal suspect was a nephew of Antonio Gutiérrez named Zoilo Álvarez, but the authorities did not find any evidence which could solve the case. Eventually, the money was returned by an anonym person. The tribunal sentenced Zoilo Álvarez to the payment of the costs and gave a warning to Juan Manuel de Santiago and to a maid named Paula for having facilitated the breaking and entering.

Mi mas estimada y querida Esposa recibi tu Carta hoy dia de la fecha a las doce de la mañana, qe por ser tan tarde no he marchado ya con Claudio y su Hermano qe han salido a las once pa esa Ciudad; pero con todo eso yo es muy regular que marche mañana Miercoles con un ordinario qe se ha quedado aqui yo no se si se me se compondra y asi puedo esperarme el Domingo por la tarde, si no hay otra novedad con el Maestro pues quiere le haga el favor de acabar la obra que estoy ha-ciendo. Diras al Sr Benito qe he visitado a su Maestro y el otro Comerciante de Libros que me insinua, y qe he ido a buscar el pliego tambien, y me han mandado volver, porqe Claudio camina para esa porqe le han mandado ir a tomar los aires por estar malo el Domingo viniendo de comer encontre a la Cuñada de la Pepa, y me llevo a Casa de su Cu-ñada, qe esta mui mala, y ya tiene otra Niña de cinco meses y a malparido un dia de estos, yo qasi no la conocia, y me dan memos pa todos nosotros y para nuest Padres Tambien he encontrado el Domingo aql Mozo de Rioseco qe comio en Casa qe tambien me da mu-chas espresiones para ti. he hallado hoy a el hermano de la Sra Ygnacia esta muy buen mozo, y da muchas espresiones para todas sus Hermanas y para ti.

Es quanto me se ofrece por ahora hasta la vista tan deseada y suspirada por este Tu afectisimo, seguro, fiel querido y afectuoso Servidor y Esposo
