Letter from Juan Ximénez Llamas, a presbyter from Belmonte, to Juan Manuel de Alcantud, a barefoot Franciscan.

The main theme in the letter is the Blessed María Isabel Herráiz´s state of health on her twelveth day fasting.

Following an accusation for «alumbrados» against María Isabel Herráiz, the Blessed of Villar del Águila, a trial took place between 1802 and 1808. The trial broadened to include many other people accused of being complicit in her delusions. Maria Isabel Herráiz believed that Jesus Christ was within her and, as a result, she would not take communion. Some of the other accused stated that they could see Jesus as a child appearing on her chest. When she renounced the faith she admitted her mistakes. All the signs, visions and revelations she had received as true and given by God, were the work of an evil spirit. She also blamed this evil spirit for tricking her into believing that the Lord had materialized in her body in order to accomplish an overall reformation and to establish a new apostleship. She declared she had to die in Rome and ascend into heaven three days afterwards, and these facts were announced in the Apocalypse and other sacred books. Maria Isabel Herráiz also argued that the Devil was to blame for all these thoughts, since her imagination had been transformed and warmed by him. She admitted that her accomplices were looked for and incited by her. In her statement, she argued that she did not make a pact with the Devil, but she was possessed by him. Furthermore, she admitted to allowing worship of herself, although she insisted it was all a diabolical artifice. According to her, she was blameless regarding the uproar in the village. Apparently there were disturbances among her followers, the «endiablados». On the upper margin of folio 6r there is an annotation that reads: "from the aforementioned Alcantud" and "March 14th 98". On the same folio, which is the superscript, there are rests of the wax seal.

Mi Amigo, y estimado Padre Lector: Recibio la Ysabel la de Vm, y en ella vi lo que para mi contenia, no respondi en el Correo anterior hasta ver si cumplidos los Doze Dias del ayuno, sucedia lo mismo que ay, pero sigue lo mismo con la novedad, que los ocho Dias primeros fueron de ayuno totalmte natural, padeciendo en el discurso de ellos una sed mui fuerte, tanto qe algunos ratos apenas podia sacar el habla del cuerpo, Cumplidos los ocho Dias manifestó el Sr como inclinacion a qe bebiesse, le mandé tomasse un vaso de agua, y le sentó tan bien, qe no se puede mejorar aunqe lo huviera tomado despues de una buena Comida, y sigue desde entonzs bebiendo todos los Dias algunas tazas de agua Caliente; tiene apetencia a comer, y está lo mas del tiempo, como si tuviera una grande enfermedad, a causa de los impulsos tan fuertes, qe tiene ,que ni ella los puede explicar, pero por esso no dexá de ir todos los Dias a comulgar, aunqe tan extraordinaria. Por las tardes no se puede levantar, y solo una noche ha ido a los exercicios, qe tenemos en este tiempo. Estando bastante debil sintio un impulso fuerte para ir a Huerta, y le mande fuesse, y assi en el Camino como allá se mantuvo sin novedad, y al Dia sigte fui yo tambien, porque me quedé con algun Cuidado. Yo cada Dia tengo mas qe admirar en esta alma al ver las cosas, y obras del Sr, que no se pueden comprender, hasta qe se digne por su bondad manifestarlas. Algunos ratos padece fuertes desconsuelos ,quando el Sr la dexa un poco en lo natural, y yo qe valgo tan poco tengo qe animarla ea. Esto es, mi P Lector, lo que puedo puedo a Vm dezir, e informar de lo qe hasta aqui ha ocurrido, oy Miercoles a las onze del Dia, que contamos Diez,yseis Dias de ayuno ,incluso este F Juan ya salio ea. No ocurre otra Cosa, encomiendeme Vm mucho mucho a Dios, qe tengo bastante necessidad. De Vm mis exps, y afectos al Sr torres, y a F Domingo, a quien escrivo tambien, por si está en essa, y qe no Juzgue l e olvidado. Queda de Vm como siempre este su afectmo Amigo, y Capn que es todo suyo en JC
